Many of us depend on our personal attendants for our independence in the community. Our personal attendants are always there to ensure that we have what we need when we need it. They are our friends, companions and key to our support networks. They are with us during our best and worst times and we treasure their involvement in our lives.
Unfortunately our personal attendants rarely get the recognition they so richly deserve. They tend to be in the background as they help us go about our day, working, volunteering in the community, meeting with family and friends or just hanging out at home. Over the last while, the BC Coalition of People with Disabilities (BCCPD) has been meeting with its community partner BC Association of Individualized Technology and Supports for People with Disabilities (BCITS) to discuss how we can do a better job of showing our appreciation and recognizing our personal attendants for all their support.
We decided that the first step in this emerging initiative is to ask for your stories. We want to hear from you about your personal attendants. We also want to hear from Personal Attendants about your experiences working with your client. Stories that are a collaboration between employers and attendants would also be most welcome.
We will publish your story in our magazines (Transition and Balance) or on our websites. Your story can be serious, funny, or however you want to tell it. We’re getting some cool buttons made that we will send you once we hear from you.
